The two different Types of Taxi Insurance

The UK has only two different types of Taxi policy, both of which can be applied to a fleet if you are running or plan on running a taxi fleet:

• Public Hire Cover – this allows you to pick up customers on the street immediately without any pre-booking.
• Private Hire Cover – this allows customers to be picked up when booked, typically through your taxi. This insurance is often referred to as Mini cab insurance and does not allow you to simply pick up people on the street, unlike the public hire insurance.

Both of the above types are available for drivers looking for comprehensive, third party fire and theft and third party only taxi insurance cover. This is also true of fleet insurance too.

What type of vehicle can I use as a Taxi?

This decision is totally up to you. There are many different types of vehicles used these days to ferry people around but typically you want something that is cost efficient so diesel and even Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) vehicles are common place on the roads today.

Saloons, people carriers and Estate cars are fairly spacious and allow at least 4 passengers comfortably with luggage, depending on make and model. The peugeot E7 has won rave reviews amongst the mini cab industry. Minibuses are also great for large groups of people or airport runs. Another type of vehicle that is becoming ever more common in large and congested cities is motorbike taxi’s.
